Nigeria has achieved a remarkable digital milestone, now retaining between 60 and 70% of its internet traffic domestically—a dramatic leap from near-zero levels of the internet’s early days. This transformation means data from popular services like Google, Meta, and TikTok now travels through local servers rather than making expensive round-trips to Europe or America, thereby boosting speeds and lowering costs for millions of users. Traffic has surged to two terabits per second as of December 2025, driven largely by global tech giants that have directly connected their servers to Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. However, significant gaps remain: Nigeria hosts only 22% of its 1,000 most-visited websites, below Africa’s 34% average, while 99.5% of users rely entirely on mobile networks for connectivity.
