Nigeria’s media landscape is tightening as the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) introduces stricter rules ahead of the 2027 elections. Broadcasters are now barred from expressing personal opinions as fact, airing inflammatory content, or suppressing opposing views, with violations set to attract sanctions. While the NBC claims these measures are necessary to curb misinformation, critics are crying foul. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and groups like SERAP have condemned the move as an attempt to muzzle the media and shrink civic space. Meanwhile, analysts warn the rules may prove unenforceable anyway, as political debate increasingly migrates to social media platforms entirely beyond the NBC’s reach.
