Nigeria Tops Shell’s Global Tax Payments in 2024

5

In 2024, Shell paid $5.34 billion to Nigeria, marking its highest payment to any country that year. Globally, Shell’s total payments to governments amounted to $28.1 billion in 2024, with Nigeria, Oman, Brazil, and Norway collectively receiving around $11.7 billion. The payment to Nigeria was higher than it was in the previous year. The sum included taxes, royalties, fees, and production entitlements, underscoring Nigeria’s pivotal role in Shell’s global operations. However, the company’s payment for 2025 will likely be lower, given its strategic exit from onshore oil operations in the Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta region, a move aimed at aligning with Shell’s environmental goals and long-term plans. Despite this shift, the oil giant maintains a significant offshore presence in Nigeria.
