Nigeria’s National Museums Exude Importance but Remain Largely Unvisited

Olugbile Holloway, who was appointed earlier this year to head the commission that runs the National Museum, is keen to change this – he wants to take the artefacts on the road and get them seen back where they once belonged. He hopes to develop a new concept of a museum that is more appealing to, and representative of, Nigerians and Africans. Established in 1957 – three years before independence – the museum houses objects from across the country, including Ife bronze and terracotta heads, Benin brass plaques and ivories, and Ibibio masks and costumes.
