Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has signed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, shortly after the nation’s National Assembly passed it. The bill was the subject of much uproar in the days leading to its signing. Just last week, protesters stormed the National Assembly demanding that a section of the bill, which mandated electronic transmission of results, be reinstated. The clause, passed by the House of Representatives, had been struck out by the Senate, arguing that Nigeria does not yet have the technical capacity to sustain the initiative. Following pushback from civil society, the Senate amended its decision to allow electronic transmission. However, it included a caveat to allow for manual collation in the event of internet failure.
