Opposition Leader to Return to Mozambique Amid Violent Election Dispute

Mozambique’s opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane plans to return from exile on Thursday, January 8, ahead of the swearing-in of President-elect Daniel Chapo next week. Mondlane, who claims the recent election was rigged, rejected Chapo’s court-confirmed victory. Consequently, his supporters staged violent protests that have left over 270 people dead since October 2024. Mondlane himself fled the country after two aides were assassinated but now vows to confront authorities, calling on supporters to welcome him in Maputo. Despite Chapo winning 65% of the vote, international observers reported irregularities, fueling Mondlane’s defiance and calls for electoral justice. The unrest has destabilized Mozambique, damaging over 500 businesses, costing 12,000 jobs, and forcing thousands to flee to neighboring countries. While Chapo urges unity and dialogue, Mondlane remains determined to challenge Frelimo’s 49-year rule and has threatened to install himself as president on January 15, Mozambique’s presidential inauguration day.
