Princeton in Africa Marks 25 Years of Service and Leadership Development

PiAf 25th

Princeton in Africa (PiAf) marked its 25th anniversary with a gala event recognizing a quarter-century of fellowship placements, leadership development, and partnerships across the African continent. Since its founding in 1999, PiAf has placed nearly 700 Fellows with host organizations in 37 African countries, providing young professionals with opportunities to contribute to critical sectors such as public health, education, conservation, and international development.

The gala honored Gbenga Oyebode, Nigerian business leader and philanthropist, and Meg Whitman, U.S. Ambassador to Kenya and former technology executive, for their outstanding contributions to leadership and service. Both honorees have longstanding ties to Africa and were recognized for their efforts to foster economic development and global collaboration.

The event was hosted by Mary Maker, a Princeton in Africa alumna, educator, and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. Maker shared personal reflections on her journey and the importance of providing opportunities for young leaders to contribute meaningfully to communities across Africa.

Throughout the evening, PiAf alumni shared stories about how the fellowship shaped their professional trajectories and deepened their commitment to Africa’s development. Alumni have gone on to careers in a range of fields including humanitarian relief, public health, education, business, and public policy.

The gala also acknowledged the crucial role of host organization partners across Africa. These organizations offer Fellows on-the-ground experience and the chance to make tangible contributions to key initiatives across the continent.

Supporters, donors, alumni, and partners were recognized for their role in sustaining and expanding Princeton in Africa’s work over the past 25 years. Looking forward, PiAf plans to continue strengthening its network of young leaders committed to positive change throughout Africa.
