The Section 89 Impeachment Committee of South Africa’s parliament has elected RISE Mzansi MP Makashule Gana as chairperson, marking the formal start of proceedings to determine whether President Cyril Ramaphosa should be removed from office over the Phala Phala scandal. Gana, backed by parties within the Government of National Unity, secured 19 votes, defeating United African Transformation leader Wonderboy Mahlatse, who drew support from opposition blocs including the EFF and MK Party. The 31-member committee will investigate whether Ramaphosa violated the Constitution after approximately $580,000 was stolen from his Limpopo game farm. If the committee determines that Ramaphosa committed serious misconduct, it could recommend his impeachment to parliament, which will then put it to a vote.
