South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has revealed that his government expressed concerns to China over Iran’s participation in recent naval exercises hosted in South African waters. Ramaphosa said Pretoria was merely the host, stressing that China organized the exercises and extended invitations, including to Iran. He revealed that South Africa urged Beijing to reconsider Iran’s involvement, especially given heightened global tensions. In response to growing scrutiny, the government has launched a board of inquiry to assess how the drills were conducted and whether official directives were followed. The move follows sharp criticism from the US, underscoring the delicate balance South Africa faces in managing strategic partnerships.
