Rights Group Slams EU Migration Deal With Libya

Amnesty International has condemned the European Union’s push to deepen migration cooperation with Libya, arguing that the policy risks enabling serious human rights abuses. The organization says both Libya’s internationally recognized government and its eastern rival administration have intensified crackdowns on migrants while promoting anti-migrant rhetoric. Libya remains a major departure point for people attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, but years of political instability have also made migrants vulnerable to trafficking, detention, extortion, and forced labor. Amnesty said the EU is seeking to establish a new rescue coordination center in Benghazi despite mass arrests and unlawful expulsions of migrants. The group’s deputy regional director said expanding cooperation with armed groups accused of war crimes shows disregard for international law, urging the EU to end policies that trap people in cycles of abuse.
