Rising Xenophobia Forces Migrant Families Into Hiding

A surge in anti-immigrant violence in South Africa’s Western Cape has forced hundreds of migrants from Mozambique, Malawi, and other neighboring countries to flee their homes and seek shelter in public facilities and remote areas. In coastal towns including Kleinmond and Mossel Bay, immigrants report being threatened, robbed, and driven from their communities by groups blaming foreigners for unemployment, crime, and economic hardship. Mozambique says five of its citizens were killed in recent attacks. Many displaced migrants have spent nights hiding in mountains or informal shelters while awaiting assistance or voluntary repatriation. While President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the attacks, he has also called for stricter migration enforcement.
