Rwanda in Talks to Host Formula 1 Race in Kigali

Rwanda is in discussions to host a Formula 1 race in Kigali. If successful, Rwanda’s bid will bring the first African F1 event since the 1993 South African Grand Prix. Formula 1 President Stefano Domenicali confirmed this development during a recent interview with Motorsport, revealing that further talks are scheduled for September. It was separately confirmed by Christian Gakwaya, president of the Rwanda Automobile Club, who emphasized the country’s preparedness to host a Formula 1 race. The proposed race would take place on a permanent track, which will require a sizeable investment to accomplish. However, competition is stiff, with other countries like Thailand also vying for a spot on the F1 calendar. Fortunately for Rwanda, its recent investments in sports infrastructure as well as partnerships with sports bodies like the NBA and the International Cycling Union will give it an edge.
