The enigmatic Burtele foot, discovered in 2009, has now been linked to a species called Australopithecus deyiremeda, a contemporary of the famous Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis). This finding provides clear evidence that two distinct hominin species coexisted in East Africa over three million years ago, challenging the long-held view that Lucy’s species was the sole ancestor to later humans.
