Senegal’s Faye signals potential split with Sonko

Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has warned that the ruling Pastef party risks “collapse” if internal divisions persist, highlighting growing tensions with Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. Despite the warning, Faye said Sonko would remain in office as long as he performs effectively, stressing his authority to appoint or dismiss the prime minister if necessary. The remarks follow months of speculation about a strained alliance between the two leaders, who rose to power after Sonko backed Faye in the 2024 election. The political uncertainty comes as Senegal faces mounting economic challenges, including stalled negotiations with the IMF over a $1.8 billion program and rising global oil prices linked to the Iran conflict.
