Seychelles has thrown its full diplomatic weight behind Mauritius in its bid to reclaim sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, with President Patrick Herminie personally attending Mauritius’ 58th Independence Day celebrations as chief guest. This move gives Mauritius a vital regional ally to legitimize its territorial claims, while Seychellois Chagossians gain assurances of equal compensation. Furthermore, the development increases diplomatic pressure on the UK to hand over ownership of Chagos to Mauritius. The Chagos dispute is especially important because it is increasingly a test case for decolonization, international law, and small island states’ ability to reshape the geopolitical order on their own terms.
