The Johannesburg Film Festival concluded its 2026 edition with the Swiss wartime drama Silent Rebellion taking home the top prize for Best Feature Film. Directed by Marie Elsa Sgualdo, the film stood out among nearly 700 submissions for its powerful storytelling and striking cinematography. Set in rural Switzerland during World War II, it follows a young woman navigating trauma and social restrictions while asserting her independence. While the international drama dominated the evening, African cinema also received strong recognition, with Variations on a Theme winning Best African Film. Under the theme “Feel the Frame,” the week-long gala celebrated the artistry behind the lens, from veteran producers to fresh student voices. With entries from almost 100 countries, the festival showcased diverse global storytelling, proving once again that Joburg is a vital hub for cinematic imagination and craft.
