South Africa’s Opposition Seeks to Revive Ramaphosa Impeachment Inquiry

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), one of South Africa’s opposition parties, has filed a case in the Constitutional Court to revive impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the alleged “Farmgate” scandal. The controversy involves the alleged theft of millions of dollars hidden in furniture at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm, as revealed by a former intelligence official. While an independent panel found evidence of potential misconduct, Ramaphosa’s African National Congress (ANC), which had a parliamentary majority at the time, dismissed the report and blocked further investigations. The EFF claims this action was unlawful and failed to hold the president to account. Ramaphosa, who faced no criminal charges over the incident, has consistently denied wrongdoing. He argued, alongside the ANC, that the report lacked credible evidence to support its finding and relied on hearsay. The Constitutional Court began hearing the case on Tuesday.
