Spain turns to Algeria for more gas

As the Iran conflict rattles global energy markets and drives up price volatility, Spain is looking south for stability. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares Bueno traveled to Algiers to explore expanding natural gas supplies from Algeria, which already accounts for more than 29% of Spain’s gas imports in the first two months of the year—making it the country’s top supplier for three consecutive years. Albares described Algeria as a dependable supplier and confirmed that the two nations agreed to deepen their strategic energy partnership. Given the MedGaz pipeline is already running at full capacity, experts say expansion could help meet rising demand as other countries also turn to Algeria. With Middle East tensions showing no sign of easing, Algeria’s role as Europe’s key energy partner appears to be growing rapidly.
