Stellenbosch restaurant named one of world’s best

South African steakhouse named one of world

A converted stable on a Stellenbosch wine estate has made global culinary history. VUUR, the fire-cooking restaurant helmed by self-taught chef Shaun Scrooby on Remhoogte Wine Estate, landed at number 52 on the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants—the highest placement ever for Africa. VUUR, a newcomer, outperformed legendary establishments from Tokyo to New York just one year after opening. The same evening, the restaurant jumped from one to two stars at the Eat Out Awards, South Africa’s most authoritative dining recognition. Scrooby, a former safari guide who has no formal culinary training, built the restaurant’s entire concept around cooking with fire as method, not spectacle. The recognition signals a broader shift, positioning Africa as a serious player in global fine dining and showcasing how local techniques can rival the world’s best.
