Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa is making a monumental move to position Africa as a beneficiary of the AI revolution. Through his company, Cassava Technologies, he plans to construct five advanced AI factories across South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and Morocco. This ambitious initiative, dubbed the “Sovereign AI Cloud” strategy, is designed to provide major African markets with their own high-performance computing infrastructure, drastically reducing reliance on foreign cloud providers. The first facility, already underway in South Africa, will run on 3,000 Nvidia GPUs, many of which have already been reserved by African developers and researchers. With only 5% of African AI talent currently accessing high-performance computing infrastructure, the factories could transform sectors from health to finance.
