Tablets Transform Learning in Malawi’s Poorest Districts

In the challenging educational landscape of Malawi, an innovative pilot program is planting the seeds for a brighter future. Children in districts like Mzimba are now using adaptive learning tablets provided by the UK edtech non-profit onebillion, offering interactive lessons in literacy and numeracy in both Chichewa and English. This technology personalizes education, allowing each child to learn at their own pace and delivering remarkable gains. Studies show it produced 4.2 months of additional learning in just over a year. Research also shows that every $1 invested through the initiative produces $106 in social good and potentially adds $16,000 to lifetime earnings. Teachers welcome the support, given high pupil-to-teacher ratios, though challenges remain around funding, power supply, and durability. Still, the program’s early success signals a promising path to transform education across Malawi by 2030.
