Team completes Kouoh’s vision for Venice Biennale

The upcoming Venice Biennale will open as planned despite the sudden death of its lead curator, Koyo Kouoh, who died at 57 shortly after being diagnosed with liver cancer. Kouoh, a prominent Cameroonian-born curator, had begun shaping the exhibition, titled “In Minor Keys,” before her passing. She intended to use the event to invite viewers to “shift to a slower gear.” A team of five close collaborators has since worked to realize her vision, relying on her notes, artist selections, and prior discussions. The show will feature 110 artists, including major international names, and aims to emphasize emotional and sensory engagement rather than overt political commentary. While curating such a large-scale event typically requires extensive preparation, organizers chose to continue the project in tribute to Kouoh’s legacy. The exhibition stands as both a major cultural event and a testament to her influence in elevating African and diaspora artists on the global stage.
