Togo’s Port of Lomé, now Africa’s fourth busiest container port, is attracting US attention as a gateway for expanding US trade across the continent. Recently, US Chargé d’Affaires Joann Lockard Michaels toured the port to identify potential areas for US private sector investment. Following the tour, the embassy highlighted the port’s deep-water capabilities, cutting-edge logistics, and strategic West African location as factors that make it a top destination for US companies looking to expand into Africa. Consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 container ports, the Port of Lomé is responsible for 70% of national trade and contributes over 75% of tax revenue, making it vital to Togo’s economy. Furthermore, it serves landlocked neighbors such as Burkina Faso and Mali. As Washington boosts commercial diplomacy in Africa, Lomé’s modern infrastructure offers a golden opportunity for US businesses to establish a strong regional foothold.
