Tripoli’s iconic Red Castle museum reopens

10

Libya has reopened its national museum, the Red Castle in Tripoli, marking its first public revival since the 2011 uprising that ended the rule of Muammar Gaddafi. Closed for more than a decade amid conflict, the museum has been renovated by the Government of National Unity, signaling a cautious return to cultural normalcy. Spanning prehistoric to Islamic eras, its galleries showcase sculptures, coins, Roman mosaics, and rare, millennia-old mummies from across the country. The reopening also highlights Libya’s efforts to recover looted antiquities, with dozens of artifacts already returned from abroad. As schools begin visiting ahead of a full public opening, officials say the museum stands as proof that institutions can be rebuilt. The move comes as Libya works to protect its heritage, including sites recognized by UNESCO, after years of instability.
