Trump Administration Cuts African Visa Hubs

The Trump administration is set to cut the number of US embassies and consulates in Africa authorized to process visas from nearly 50 to just 20, according to officials and an internal State Department memo. The 20 remaining hubs span the continent and include cities such as Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, Johannesburg, Kinshasa, and Addis Ababa. The reduction, expected this June, is part of a broader crackdown on both immigrant and non-immigrant visa issuance, reflecting Washington’s drive to limit immigration and reduce visa overstays. For citizens of countries without a designated hub, the change means traveling to one of the approved processing locations, potentially across significant distances and at considerable cost. While consular sections outside the hub network will remain open, they will only offer limited services, such as US passport renewals.
