Trump Immigration Curbs Hit Africa’s Climate-exposed Nations

A significant share of the countries targeted by the Trump administration’s expanded immigration restrictions are African nations that rank among the world’s most vulnerable to climate shocks. Chad and Niger—the world’s two most climate-vulnerable nations—are completely barred, alongside Sudan, Somalia, and Sierra Leone. These countries face rising risks from droughts, floods, food insecurity, and displacement. In the past, some sought to migrate to the US to escape the disasters. However, with the immigration restrictions, they now face greater barriers to entering the US. For the Trump administration, the restrictions provide greater control over migration flows, which aligns with its immigration policy objectives. On the other hand, vulnerable African populations lose access to potential refuge and economic opportunities abroad. With no legal recognition of climate displacement and aid funding declining simultaneously, African nations face compounding instability—displacement, conflict, and exclusion—generating regional crises that restrictive border policies alone cannot resolve.
