East Africa is on the cusp of a major energy milestone as Uganda and Tanzania say crude exports from the long-awaited East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) are set to begin in October. The $5 billion, 1,443-kilometer pipeline—now about 75% complete—will carry Uganda’s waxy crude from the Albertine Graben to Tanzania’s port of Tanga, making it the world’s longest heated crude line. Officials say construction has entered its final phase, with full startup targeted for mid-2026. Once operational, EACOP could unlock Uganda’s vast oil reserves while delivering jobs, revenue, and regional trade gains for Tanzania, despite lingering climate concerns.
