After 16 years of silence, Uganda’s sacred Kasubi Tombs have reopened, restoring a powerful spiritual and cultural landmark at the heart of the Buganda kingdom. The site, which houses the spirits of four ancient kings, was nearly lost after a devastating fire in 2010. Now, its central structure—Muzibu Azala Mpanga—has been painstakingly revived using traditional methods that required training new artisans, since such skills had nearly vanished. More than a physical rebuild, the project reconnected rituals, clan roles, and spiritual practices central to Buganda identity. Each of the 52 woven rings in the vast roof represents a Buganda clan; each clan holds specific responsibilities that cannot be transferred. Today, the “vessel” is once again open, allowing pilgrims to commune with ancestors in a cool, bark-lined sanctuary that defies the equatorial heat.
