The United States is deepening ties with Ethiopia by helping finance the $10 billion Bishoftu International Airport, a new hub set to transform the Horn of Africa’s aviation landscape. Located 40 km south of Addis Ababa, the airport will ease congestion at Bole International and allow Ethiopian Airlines to expand long-haul routes, including nonstop flights to North America. The project, backed by the US International Development Finance Corporation and Boeing, underscores Washington’s growing commercial and strategic interests in the region. Analysts view it as both a move to support a key Boeing customer and a geopolitical play to counter China’s infrastructure dominance in East Africa, while bolstering US influence through sustainable investment.
