The United States has reaffirmed support for investments in Western Sahara, a territory claimed by Morocco but contested by the Algeria-backed Polisario Front. US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said Washington would encourage American companies to pursue opportunities across Morocco, including the disputed region, following talks with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Morocco has been developing infrastructure in Western Sahara in recent years, including roads, phosphate mining, renewable energy projects, and a port. The Trump administration voiced support for Morocco’s autonomy plan in July, calling it the only viable solution for the region. France and the UK have taken similar positions, though Algeria and the Polisario continue to demand a referendum that includes independence as an option.
