A US judge in Boston has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s plan to deport migrants to Libya, citing violations of a previous order he made safeguarding potential deportees’ due process. The decision follows reports that deportation flights could begin imminently, despite Libya’s ongoing instability and its prime minister’s public rejection of the plan. Immigration lawyers swiftly filed an emergency request, arguing the move endangered lives and bypassed legal protections. Libya, divided between rival governments, is one of several countries – including Rwanda, Benin, Equatorial Guinea, Angola, Eswatini, and Moldova – that the Trump administration is reportedly courting for migrant deportations. Of these nations, only Rwanda has confirmed it is in talks with the US to accept deported migrants.
