Zambia takes bold stand against sexual violence

Zambia has introduced sweeping legal reforms that deny bail to suspects accused of sexual offenses. The law requires suspects to remain in custody until their trials conclude. Championed by Justice Minister Princess Kasune Zulu, a longtime HIV activist and survivor of child marriage, the new law aims to protect survivors from intimidation and restore confidence in the justice system. Supporters, including women’s rights groups, say it addresses longstanding concerns about perpetrators quickly returning to communities. However, critics warn of potential abuses, citing risks of false accusations and prolonged pretrial detention in a slow judicial system. While advocates argue the severity matches rising abuse cases, experts stress that stronger investigations and faster courts are essential to balance victim protection with fair trials.
