Social enterprises in Zanzibar are transforming the tourism industry by opening new opportunities for women. The Kawa Training Center promotes gender equality by training young women in guiding, digital storytelling, and hospitality, with female students now making up 50% of enrollment. Culinary eco-tourism initiatives like Mamas of Zanzibar empower women through cooking and hosting experiences, improving livelihoods and independence. Meanwhile, programs like “Destination Zero Waste Zanzibar,” led by the TUI Care Foundation and Chako, engage women in upcycling tourism waste into handcrafted goods. These initiatives foster sustainable development, challenge gender norms, and position women as key contributors in Zanzibar’s travel economy.
