Zimbabwe has secured a breakthrough deal to export blueberries to China after agreeing on strict phytosanitary standards during President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s recent visit to Beijing. Zimbabwe’s Horticultural Development Council hailed the move as opening a gateway to one of the world’s fastest-growing blueberry markets, boosting opportunities for local growers. With production expected to climb from 8,000 metric tons in 2024 to 12,000 in 2025, Zimbabwe is set to become a rising force in the global blueberry industry. Favorable climatic conditions give the country’s farmers an edge, allowing high yields and early market entry. However, this promising venture is not without its hurdles. Growers face challenges such as steep levies and strict foreign currency retention policies. To fully capitalize on this opportunity, producers are advocating for supportive government policies, including tax breaks and reduced import duties.
