Zoey Martinson’s debut feature, The Fisherman, has been making waves, blending comedy, color, and Ghanaian storytelling to global acclaim. Inspired by both her time in Ghana’s fishing villages and a short film she created about Jamestown’s threatened fishermen, the movie follows Atta Oko, a dreamer on a quirky journey with a talking fish, two orphans, and a strong-willed young woman. Balancing humor with reflections on class, environment, and identity, the film shows how joy can confront tragedy. After premiering at Venice and winning awards worldwide, including the UNESCO Fellini Medal, The Fisherman finally arrived in Ghana this September, celebrating not only its characters but also the power of African stories told with laughter and heart.
