In a bold conservation move, 70 southern white rhinos have been relocated from South Africa to Rwanda in the largest airlift of its kind. The 3,400-kilometer journey involved transporting the animals in steel crates via truck and Boeing 747 from Munywana Conservancy to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s vast protected wetland. This rewilding initiative aims to establish a strong breeding population and safeguard the species, which has suffered a population decline due to poaching and colonial-era hunting. With only around 17,000 southern white rhinos left, conservationists hope Rwanda will become a sanctuary for their recovery. The rhinos are now under veterinary care to help them adjust and thrive in their new home.
