The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced a massive $3.2 billion fund to boost local vaccine manufacturing. This initiative, backed by the African Development Bank and GAVI, aims to end Africa’s reliance on imported vaccines, a vulnerability starkly exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The investment will empower African nations to develop their own pharmaceutical production infrastructure, ensuring equitable access to future vaccines. Complementing this effort, the Africa CDC has also established a continental procurement mechanism. This system will pool demand from all 55 African Union member states, creating a powerful, unified market of 1.4 billion people. This approach is expected to streamline vaccine distribution and enhance Africa’s long-term health security.
