Rwanda sues UK over scrapped migrant deal

Rwanda sues UK government

Rwanda has launched legal action against the United Kingdom over unpaid funds tied to their now-defunct migrant relocation deal, escalating a long-running and controversial saga. The agreement, struck in 2022 under former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, aimed to stem illegal migration by sending asylum seekers arriving by boat to Rwanda. However, the policy collapsed under legal pressure after the UK Supreme Court ruled Rwanda was not a safe destination. Although London paid Kigali $330.9 million, only four migrants were ever transferred before Prime Minister Keir Starmer scrapped the plan in 2024. Rwanda is now seeking an additional $68.9 million, arguing the UK failed to formally end the agreement, a claim Britain says it will vigorously contest.
