President Ramaphosa to formally receive new US envoy

After months of diplomatic deep freeze, the United States and South Africa might be inching toward a thaw. President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to receive the credentials of US Ambassador-designate Brent Bozell on April 8, alongside envoys from 19 other nations. The formal step allows Bozell to fully assume his duties—but tensions remain high. The Trump administration expelled South Africa’s previous envoy last year after he criticized Trump supporters, and Bozell himself recently received a formal rebuke from South Africa’s foreign ministry over his remarks on a local court ruling. With diplomatic engagement still limited and key posts unfilled, this credential ceremony is a significant signal that both sides may be ready to rebuild ties, even as disagreements over trade, foreign policy, and rhetoric continue to test the relationship.
