The 2025 IMD Smart City Index reveals mixed progress for African cities. Cairo, Egypt; Rabat, Morocco; and Cape Town, South Africa, made progress, albeit little, coming in at 117th, 123rd, and 124th, respectively. Algiers, Algeria, ranks next at 128th, followed by Nigeria’s Abuja and Lagos, ranked 133rd and 135th, respectively. While these cities performed roughly the same or registered minor improvements compared to last year, Nairobi, Kenya, experienced a setback, dropping five places to 136th due to issues such as inadequate services and high unemployment. In contrast, Accra, Ghana, and Tunis, Tunisia, ranked lowest among the African cities on the list, coming in at 141st and 142nd, respectively. The index highlights the critical need for improvements in affordable housing, transport, and governance to boost African cities’ smart capabilities and quality of life.
