Africa Targets $50 Billion a Year for New Climate Initiative

9

African leaders have united behind the Addis Ababa Declaration, a landmark climate plan unveiled at an African Union (AU) summit in Ethiopia ahead of COP30. The declaration reframes Africa as a source of solutions, emphasizing three pillars: expanding renewable energy, forming a coalition of African countries with critical minerals, and protecting natural heritage. Central to this vision is a call for climate justice, and AU leaders are demanding $50 billion annually in adaptation funding to counter the severe impacts the continent faces despite contributing only 4% of global emissions. While some critics warn that the plan is too broad, African leaders see it as Africa’s strongest push yet for fair climate funding.
