Africa’s Agenda at UNGA 80: Minerals, Investment, and Security in Focus

1

As the 80th UN General Assembly convenes in New York, Africa is set to push its priorities amid a gathering that is widely expected to be transactional and nationalist in focus. Key issues the continent’s representatives intend to advocate for include Security Council reform, funding for African Union-led peace operations, and increased attention for overlooked conflicts such as Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). African leaders are also taking the lead on critical minerals, with plans to host high-level roundtables to ensure the continent plays a central role in the global energy transition. Meanwhile, trade, investment, and deal-making will likely dominate the sidelines, with events focused on Kenya, Nigeria, and the DRC. Despite a cautious diplomatic atmosphere, Africa aims to secure investment, climate finance, debt relief, and stronger regional representation on the global stage.
