Representing Egypt at the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Wael Shawky has created two musical films that depict a pivotal moment in history, which may or may not have actually happened. Weaving a story that mixes fact and fable, he focuses on a supposed kerfuffle between a driver and passenger, which ultimately led to Britain’s occupation of Egypt. In his research-based multimedia practice, which spans film, music, performance, painting and sculpture, Shawky explores notions of national, religious and artistic identity. His work narrates stories that interlace fact, fiction and fable, and which are inspired by historiographical and literary references.
