Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has publicly rejected a recent ceasefire proposal, labeling it the “worst yet.” He declared the plan, presented by a group of mediators known as the Quad, utterly unacceptable to his government. Burhan voiced strong accusations of bias, specifically targeting the United Arab Emirates’ membership in the mediating group, which also includes the US, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. He asserted that the proposal would effectively dismantle the national army while allowing the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia to remain in place. Burhan instead welcomed a separate initiative backed by Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, urging mediators to adopt a more balanced approach. This rejection deepens the political stalemate in a conflict that has already created the world’s most severe displacement crisis.
