Africa’s tourism sector is booming, with over 50 million international visitors across nine major destinations. Egypt led the surge, attracting 14.91 million tourists in 2023. Cairo International Airport emerged as Africa’s busiest, handling 26.2 million passengers—a 31% increase from 2022 and 8.6 million more than South Africa’s O.R. Tambo Airport. The airport’s four terminals support its expanding role, with Terminal 3, opened in 2009, being the largest. Originally opened in 1963, the airport has undergone numerous upgrades to meet rising demand. Egypt’s strong tourism appeal, historic sites, and strategic infrastructure place Cairo International Airport firmly at the center of African air travel.
