Cameroon Opposition Candidate Calls for Split from France

4

Cameroonian presidential hopeful Serge Espoir Matomba is making waves with a bold, anti-establishment campaign rooted in reclaiming sovereignty. Matomba, the first secretary of the Peuple Uni pour la Rénovation Sociale (PURS) party, rejects elite-driven coalitions and calls for a clean break from colonial legacies—starting with abandoning the CFA franc and rewriting the constitution. He envisions a Cameroon built on self-reliance, national identity, and grassroots development, including local energy production, food security, and education reform. Even though Matomba acknowledges Cameroon’s internal corruption, he links it to colonial political culture and vows to implement sweeping reforms to address it. He is inspired by the Alliance of Sahel States’ sovereignty push and insists Cameroon must join the movement.
