Cameroon opposition leader flees to Gambia

2

Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary has sought temporary refuge in Gambia following a contested election that secured longtime President Paul Biya an eighth term, sparking deadly protests across the country. Gambia has granted Tchiroma refuge on humanitarian grounds to ensure his safety while working with regional partners, including Nigeria, to promote a peaceful resolution. Tchiroma disputes the official results, claiming victory and urging citizens to reject Biya’s win. Since the election, violence has erupted in cities like Douala, Maroua, and Garoua, with casualty estimates ranging from 16 (government figures) to over 55 (opposition and human rights groups). Biya, 92, has ruled Cameroon since 1982, rarely appearing publicly and delegating governance to officials and family.
