Since the election, violence has erupted in cities like Douala, Maroua, and Garoua, with casualty estimates ranging from 16 (government figures) to over 55 (opposition and human rights groups). Biya, 92, has ruled Cameroon since 1982, rarely appearing publicly and delegating governance to officials and family.
