Cameroon’s Paul Biya wins controversial eighth term

1

Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya has been declared the winner of a contentious election, securing his eighth consecutive term in office. The official results grant him a new seven-year mandate, which could see him remain in power until he’s nearly 100. This outcome has been met with significant opposition and public unrest. His main challenger, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, had previously claimed victory, calling for protests if the constitutional council were to announce what he termed “falsified” results. The announcement follows a tense period marked by clashes between security forces and opposition supporters, leaving four dead in Douala. Biya, who first took power in 1982, has maintained a firm grip on the nation through constitutional changes and repression.
