In a triumphant moment for international cinema, the Sudanese drama “Cotton Queen” has captured the prestigious Golden Alexander, the top prize at the Thessaloniki Film Festival. The film marks the first feature from Sudanese filmmaker Suzannah Mirghani. The story follows Nafisa, a teenager working in her grandmother’s cotton fields while dreaming of her own future and a young man she loves. Her quiet world is upended, however, by the arrival of a wealthy entrepreneur from London, which sets in motion family and community plans that threaten to dictate her destiny without her consent. In a poignant gesture, Mirghani dedicated this significant award to her Sudanese cast and crew, as well as to the people of Sudan, who continue to endure a devastating civil war.
