The Dangote Refinery, Africa’s largest, is on track to process only Nigerian crude by the end of 2025, marking a significant shift toward energy self-sufficiency. Currently, the facility, which refines 550,000 barrels per day, sources some of its crude from Nigeria and imports the rest—mainly from the US. However, as long-term foreign supply contracts expire, Dangote Industries expects local producers to step up. The refinery’s expansion has already turned Nigeria into a net exporter of petroleum products, a reversal of its previous dependence on costly imports. While crude theft and production challenges have reduced output, Dangote Industries is optimistic that improved ties with the government and local traders will boost supply. The move promises economic relief and a stronger regional energy footprint.
